Hallux Rigidus refers to arthritis of the main joint of the big toe, in the ball of the foot.

The pain and inflammation can restrict movement and the main feature of this condition is stiffness which makes it increasingly difficult to bend the toe. It can affect patients of all ages.

Often there is no definitive cause for this condition and it can develop at any age, though it is especially common in patients over 50. Sometimes it is caused by injury or an underlying medical problem such as gout.

Initially pain killers are recommended to treat the joint pain but if the toe remains painful then cortisone or Durolane injections may help to reduce inflammation inside the joint. Splints, pads, insoles and orthotics can also be used to help ease discomfort, though they will not cure the condition.

If the big toe joint is still painful, despite management through conservative treatment options, then surgical treatment can be considered.

Mr. Kannegieter can discuss the best treatment options for you during your consultation.
