Tendon Pain

What is Tendon Pain?

From tendonitis to tendon rupture to over-tight tendons within the foot, pain can arise from an imbalance of tendon anatomy and is usually worse during and after activity. High-quality imaging and scans to aid diagnosis can guide your treatment and produce an effective recovery plan.

What Causes Tendon Pain?

There are number of reasons a patient may develop tendon pain.

Sometimes underlying medical conditions, such as gout and rheumatoid arthritis, can cause foot and ankle tendonitis.

When the tendon is overloaded with repetitive movement (e.g. running) it can become painful and aggravated.

Injury and abnormal foot structure can also cause tendonitis.

What are the Treatment Options for Tendon Pain?

The good news is most patients suffering from tendon pain can be managed effectively with conservative treatment. Typically, this involves a period of rest to allow symptoms to settle and easing gentle back into activity.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Treatment depends on the type of tendon injury but can include:

A brace may be worn for a short while or during activities requiring repetitive ankle motion to help the healing process.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) can be an effective option to help reduce pain. Shockwaves are passed through the skin to the affected area during this treatment.

Cortisone injections, which are potent anti-inflammatories can be injected to painful areas to reduce discomfort and swelling.

PRP injections (where plasma-rich protein taken from the patient’s own blood is injected into the affected area) can be helpful to stimulate healing.

Surgical Treatment

In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the tendon/tendons.
